Présentation

Throughout the 20th century and in the years of the 21st already gone by, philosophy of science has become a research domain of increasing fertility, whose branches display a notable degree of specialization. Not only can we talk, thus, of a philosophy of physics or a philosophy of biology, but the philosophical problems arisen in quantum mechanics, cosmology, evolutionary biology or molecular genetics appear as problems of true singularity and relevance, problems that deserve specific focus and treatment. The present volume, a collection of philosophical essays on physics and biology, tries to meet the requirements of that double current condition of the philosophy of science. On the one hand, it deepens into problems defined within these areas of specialized research; yet, on the other hand, it is divided into four sections – space, time, causality and method - : traditional ambits of reflection for philosophy that even today are a valid frame for the questions posed and answers given within the most recent physical and biological sciences.
